It’s fair to point out that Chelsea’s recruitment team have been a bit wild in recent transfer windows.
The sheer volume of ins and outs at Stamford Bridge in the last couple of years means that Chelsea have had many successes and failures in the transfer market.
The signings of stars such as Christopher Nkunku and Joao Felix simply haven’t worked out. Meanwhile, the sales of players such as Callum Hudson-Odoi and Conor Gallagher have angered supporters.
Joe Cole’s message to the Chelsea hierarchy is that they need to build a more balanced squad because they’re too reliant on youngsters. However, the average age could get even lower with the arrival of players such as Estevao Willian and Kendry Paez in 2025.
Blues co-owners Behdad Eghbali and Todd Boehly often face the scrutiny of the public, but sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley should definitely be held more accountable.

Chelsea could make another huge mistake with Renato Veiga
Renato Veiga is a perfect example of the chaos when it comes to Chelsea’s transfer strategy.
The versatile 21-year-old star joined the Blues last summer on a seven-year deal from Basel, and he looked impressive during the first half of the season as a squad player. In particular, the fact he can play at left-back, centre-half or defensive midfield makes the youngster a real asset.
However, the Portugal international was sent out on loan to Juventus in January for the rest of the 2024/25 season.
The Daily Mail now reports that Chelsea will make Veiga available for clubs to buy for around £30m. Apparently, Juventus are keen on taking him back on loan again next season.
If Veiga is sold this summer, we think it could become the latest significant transfer error from the Blues.
Even though Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca massively rates Veiga, the latest speculation suggests he could exit Stamford Bridge on a permanent basis for around £30m. In the current market, we think that could be great value for any suitor to sign a youngster with huge potential.
| Team | Appearances |
| Basel | 26 |
| Chelsea | 18 |
| Augsburg | 13 |
| Juventus | 9 |
| Portugal | 4 |

Renato Veiga should be in Chelsea’s first team next season
We’d love to see Veiga back in Chelsea colours competing for a starting position next season, although that has now been put into doubt by the latest speculation.
It’s quite impressive that the youngster is already playing on the international stage with Portugal. Back in October, Diogo Dalot described Veiga as “excellent” after his display at centre-back in a Nations League match.
During Veiga’s spell in Italy with Juventus, he’s largely performed superbly well as a central defender.
| Fixture | Minutes played | Match rating |
| Juventus 2-1 Leece | 90 | 7.7 |
| Roma 1-1 Juventus | 90 | 7.4 |
| Juventus 1-0 Genoa | 90 | 7.3 |
| Fiorentina 3-0 Juventus | 59 | 5.6 |
| PSV Eindhoven 3-1 Juventus | 12 | 6.3 |
| Juventus 1-0 Inter Milan | 90 | 7.6 |
| Juventus 2-1 PSV Eindhoven | 90 | 6.7 |
| Como 1-2 Juventus | 90 | 7.3 |
| Juventus 4-1 Empoli | 90 | 7.6 |
When you factor in that Chelsea’s defence has been up and down this season, Veiga would be a great alternative for them moving forward. Instead, there may be a chance they let go a star in the making on the cheap.
If Veiga goes, we wouldn’t be surprised if the club regrets it in a similar way they must regret Lewis Hall’s sale to Newcastle United.
