Chelsea should make no-brainer decision to re-sign former player in £21m January transfer

Chelsea are expected to be active in the upcoming January transfer window, as they always are.

The Blues have fallen from title contention to outside the top four in the last month, raising questions about Enzo Maresca’s squad.

They have encountered a major problem with holding onto leads, dropping more points from winning positions than any other Premier League team.

This suggests that Chelsea need to add some experienced players to their ranks at the earliest opportunity.

The Blues should now turn to a former academy star to help address this issue, as he has just become available for £21 million.

Chelsea should sign Nathan Ake from Man City in January

From Romelu Lukaku to David Luiz, Chelsea have made a habit of signing former players, so one more would not hurt.

They should now look to bring back Nathan Ake, who made 17 appearances for the Blues in all competitions between 2013 and 2017.

Ake has since gone on to have a stellar career, winning four Premier League titles and a Champions League with Manchester City.

Unfortunately, at 30 years of age and with a concerning injury record, he is probably not the same player he was a few seasons ago.

However, talkSPORT understands that City are willing to let him go for just £21m – a very reasonable asking price.

Of course, Levi Colwill remains Chelsea’s long-term solution for the left centre-back position, but Ake would provide a short-term answer.

He has more experience than any other player in the Blues’ squad and would likely be an upgrade on Tosin Adarabioyo and Trevoh Chalobah.

For that price, Ake is exactly the type of player sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart should be targeting next month.

How many games has Nathan Ake played this season?

Nathan Ake has played just 595 minutes in 10 appearances for Man City this season.

The Dutchman’s only starts have come in City’s three EFL Cup matches, in the Champions League against Bayer Leverkusen, and in the Premier League against Everton.

Therefore, he might need a few games to build his match sharpness, but this would not be an issue for Chelsea.

If a deal were agreed soon, the Blues could play him in their FA Cup tie with Charlton next weekend and when they welcome Pafos to the Bridge on 21 January.
