Chelsea’s European dream is over as Messi shines

Chelsea have crashed out of the Champions League after a 3-0 second leg defeat to Barcelona. Lionel Messi scored within three minutes of the start, before setting up Ousmane Dembele for Barcelona’s second. The Argentine grabbed his second and Barca’s third to send them through to the quarter-finals of the competition. The Blues didn’t play too badly, but there was a lack of urgency and impetus in the final third. Here’s impressed last night:

3. Willian

In a game largely dominated by Barcelona, it wasn’t the easiest nights for Chelsea’s attacking trio. But Willian, Chelsea’s hero from the first leg, was one of a few bright lights in the starting eleven. Like the first leg, he was a willing runner and could’ve caused some problems on another night. He had a few efforts on goal blocked, but the Barcelona defence were resolute and it was hard to get beyond them. Willian continued his fine form with a good performance.

2. Marcos Alonso

Although the defensive side of his game could be questioned, Alonso was a lot better going forward last night. The wing-back hit the post with a free-kick, which left Ter Stegen scrambling. He had a few efforts blocked by Barcelona defenders, and was always an option on the left. On another night, like with Willian, it could be a different story.

1. N’Golo Kante

What a night for Kante. Despite the scoreline, the Frenchman was fantastic. Against a brilliant Barcelona midfield, it wasn’t going to be easy for Kante. However, during the game, he made eight tackles and gained possession of the ball on 13 occasions. He was also very good with his passing, with 95.7% of his passes being successful, as well as winning 66.7% of his duels. It was a tough night for Chelsea, but Kante thrived. A great performance from the midfielder.
