Chelsea returned to winning ways at the weekend with a hard-fought victory against Newcastle United on Sunday.

Enzo Maresca’s side ended their two-game winless run, however are still waiting for the big-name scalp to get everyone fully believing that they can be a main contender to finish in the top four this season.

Their only two Premier League defeats have come at the hands of Manchester City and Liverpool, and the fixture against Manchester United coming this Sunday gives them a chance to secure the new manager’s first big scalp.

Chelsea vs Manchester United a whole lot harder after Erik ten Hag sacking

Despite the fact the Red Devils sit in 14th in the table, a victory at Old Trafford is certainly nothing to be sniffed at by any side.

While the Blues were preparing to take on Erik ten Hag’s side at the weekend, the proposition has now been changed after the Dutchman was sacked by United today.

It has been reported that club legend Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the side for the forseeable future, meaning he will be opposite Maresca in the dugout on Sunday.

Chelsea will no doubt have fancied their chances at getting at United at the weekend, especially with likely unrest from supporters inside the stadium at the situation they found themselves in.

However, without the uncertainty hanging over the manager and the pressure he would have found himself under, there may be a new level of confidence surrounding the home side on Sunday.

Erik ten Hag’s record against Chelsea

The Blues have matched up against Ten Hag when he was in charge of both Ajax and United. Chelsea picked up their first win against him as United manager late last season thanks to some Cole Palmer brilliance.

A win on Sunday would see the Blues push closer to breaking into the top four, with a lot of the sides around them dropping points in their last fixtures.

Defeat would likely bring up more questions about the side’s ability to deal with the big clubs in the Premier League, and cast doubt over their ability to finish in the top four.
