Chelsea’s reason for wanting to sign Folarin Balogun is ridiculous

Folarin Balogun has impressed at the World Cup with the USA national team, and that appears to have caught Chelsea’s attention.

Chelsea have shown interest in Balogun in the past and seem to have him on their radar again after his two goals in football’s most important competition.

The striker scored a brace in the USA’s group-stage opener against Paraguay, helping them to a 4-1 win.

However, according to one report, that is not the only reason why Chelsea are thinking about signing Balogun in this transfer window.

Chelsea want to sign Folarin Balogun because of ‘American ties’

CaughtOffside has claimed that Chelsea view Balogun as an “intriguing option” because of his potential and “American ties” and are monitoring the player as a result.

Chelsea have American owners after being taken over by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital in 2022, and the former spoke about expanding the club’s brand in the US in 2024.

Initially discussing Cole Palmer, Boehly said: “Hopefully, Cole Palmer will become a household name (here) soon. He’s been a phenomenon for us and so we’re thinking hard about how we continue to expand our brand in the United States. That’s ultimately a priority as well.”

Signing a star of the USA national team like Balogun would obviously help Chelsea with the above, but it is not a good enough reason to bring the 24-year-old in, especially when centre-forward is not a priority right now.

Joao Pedro is Chelsea’s first-choice striker, while the club are yet to offload any of their other current No.9 options, which include Liam Delap, Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu.

Emmanuel Emegha could also be part of Xabi Alonso’s first-team squad next season, which would leave no room for Balogun if one of the above names remains at Stamford Bridge, too.

Balogun had a pretty good season with Monaco. The former Arsenal man scored 19 goals in all competitions as he helped his side to finish seventh in the Ligue 1 table.

He also netted five times in 10 Champions League outings, but is Balogun really what Chelsea need right now? The answer is probably not.
