Cole Palmer was spot on with what he said about Chelsea’s Romeo Lavia in June

When you pick out the biggest positives in Chelsea’s season so far, Cole Palmer and Romeo Lavia would both be near the top of the list.

Cole Palmer, 22, has built on last year’s stunning debut season at Chelsea with a quick start in this campaign. So far, the left-footed attacker has seven goals and five assists in 10 Premier League games.

As for Romeo Lavia, his first 12 months at Stamford Bridge was wrecked by injury, playing only once throughout the whole of last season. Thankfully, the 20-year-old defensive midfielder is much more involved this term, playing six matches across all competitions so far.

Tim Sherwood thinks Lavia can be a “top drawer” player for Chelsea after being impressed by his performances recently.

What Cole Palmer said about Romeo Lavia five months ago has come true

During an interview back in June 2024, Palmer claimed Lavia would prove his quality to everyone once fit. He made the confident prediction about his Chelsea teammate, who’s someone he previously played with in the Manchester City academy.

Palmer told SPORTbible in the summer: “One person I’ve played with [who is good] is Romeo Lavia. We’ve not seen him this season because he’s been injured for a full year but I think he’s one that, when he gets playing everyone will think, ‘Oh, he’s really good’”.

In fairness, Palmer’s faith in Lavia has been fully justified.

The biggest compliment you can pay Lavia is that he’s cemented his spot in Chelsea’s best line-up recently at the expense of Enzo Fernandez, and it doesn’t look like he’ll be giving up his starting position anytime soon.

Barcelona have an interest in signing Chelsea midfielder Lavia, but there’s “zero chance” that the young Belgian star will be allowed to leave the club.

Romeo Lavia looks super impressive for Chelsea

The new-look Chelsea midfield of Lavia and Moises Caicedo looks extremely strong right now, with the pair starting the previous three consecutive Premier League matches together.

In Lavia’s six appearances this season, he’s started four of them. Here is how the deep-lying midfielder has been rated by Fotmob in his four starts this campaign.

Lavia works superbly well in the Chelsea system as the anchor in midfield that can receive the ball in any area and come away with it. On top of that, he’s aggressive and intelligent out of possession in his defensive work.
