Marcos Alonso has surprisingly become Chelsea’s best creator in the first two games of the season as Thomas Tuchel potentially faces a selection headache ahead of next weekend’s trip to Anfield.

Initially, many fans would expect Ben Chilwell to reclaim his spot in the team sooner than later.

Chilwell missed a large part of the Chelsea pre-season due to his involvement at the Euro 2020, but he was still the first-choice left-back under Tuchel.

However, Alonso, who replaced him in the team in the wins over Crystal and Arsenal, has made a very convincing case for himself.

Alonso, the new Chelsea creative outlet

Not only that he offers an obvious set-piece threat, it seems that he has also improved significantly in terms of playmaking.

The Spaniard has created seven chances in the last two games so far, more than any other Chelsea player.

To put into perspective, only Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold (10) and Newcastle United’s Matt Richie (8) have created more than the Chelsea defender.

While at Chelsea, Mason Mount and Reece James have had joint-second most key passes with four each.

Obviously, Tuchel might still opt for Chilwell for the upcoming Liverpool clash, despite Alonso’s impressive performances.

Chilwell is arguably a safer defensive option, and nullifying Liverpool’s right flank duo Mohamed Salah and Alexander-Arnold could be more important.

Another potential selection headache for right centre-back position

Tuchel might have to make a decision on the opposite side of the pitch as well.

The German deployed James as a right centre-back towards the end of last season in order to cope with quick forwards such as Jamie Vardy and Raheem Sterling.

Liverpool obviously has Sadio Mane, and despite his experience, Cesar Azpilicueta might have a hard time dealing with his pace.

Tuchel does not have to lose James’ ability to go forward, though, as he has a young option in Trevoh Chalobah for the centre-back role.

Although, it seems unlikely that Tuchel will omit his captain from his team in a such a big game.
