Forget Adam Wharton, Chelsea can sign Granit Xhaka 2.0 for Xabi Alonso and pay just £25m

Chelsea have been told that if they want to sign Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton, then BlueCo will need to shell out a nine-figure fee for the third time. But the perfect midfielder would cost half that.

Wharton has sparkled for Palace, playing a key role during the Oliver Glasner era at Selhurst Park. It has seen the former Blackburn star win the FA Cup, the Conference League, and earn England caps.

How much do YOU think Adam Wharton is worth? 💸

Chelsea only want to pay £50m-£60m.

Unfortunate to miss out on Thomas Tuchel’s England World Cup squad this summer, Wharton would be a stunning signing for Chelsea. The Blues are interested and want to sign Wharton for a £50m-£60m fee.

But new reports say Palace want £100m for Wharton. A big fee for a player who is somewhat lightweight, and while he does suit Xabi Alonso, he’s not what Chelsea’s midfield needs. Youssouf Fofana, however, is.

Chelsea really need to consider signing Youssouf Fofana

Wharton is lightweight and while excellent with the ball, Chelsea need more steel in the middle of the park. A different profile to that of Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo, and Youssouf Fofana is ideal.

Alonso sparkled in his role at Leverkusen, and a big part of that was Granit Xhaka. Physical, a leader that protected the back four but also produced big moments with his passing and long-range shooting.

Signing Xhaka would be controversial. He’s well into his thirties, and right now, Sunderland won’t sell him after qualifying for Europe. But Chelsea can sign the next-best thing in Milan’s France midfielder Fofana.

The midfielder has spent the last two seasons in Italy after joining Milan from Monaco. This summer, Football Italia say Fofana is available for a bargain fee between £21m and £25m; Chelsea must pounce.

Moises Caicedo needs help and Enzo Fernandez needs freedom

If Alonso is to utilise his 3-4-2-1 system, that two-man midfield behind, say Fernandez – if he stays at Chelsea – and Cole Palmer needs to be rock solid but able to progress the play in transition, as well.

Well, compare Fofana to Wharton. Better successful takeons, more touches in the final third, more chances created, better pass completion and even though it is minimal, he better expected assists.

Progressive Metric (2025/26)Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace)Youssouf Fofana (AC Milan)

That is just the in-possession, attacking stats of the two midfielders. It goes without saying that the taller, stronger, more defensively-minded Fofana would be a much more useful option in front of the defence.

If Chelsea are going to get the best out of their new manager, they must sign the players that suit his system and Fofana is just that. At a quarter of Wharton’s asking price, it feels like an absolute no-brainer.
