Andreas Christensen has not played a single competitive minute for Chelsea this season. So far, Blues boss Maurizio Sarri has preferred David Luiz.
Christensen was superb in Antonio Conte’s defence last season, until the demands of his first full season in the intensity of the Premier League led to a series of defensive errors.
He lost his place at the end of last season but he still signed a long-term contract. Many assumed he would be primed to play in Sarri’s back four given his ability on the ball.
However, David Luiz now plays alongside Antonio Rudiger. This is despite the fact that Luiz barely featured last season after falling out with Conte. He has lost speed due to the knee injury inflicted upon him by Sergio Aguero two seasons ago.
At 31, it is unrealistic to expect the Brazilian to be able to iron out his defensive lapses which have already been evident this season.
For now, Luiz will continue to start after having had a full pre-season under Sarri and thanks to his ability to distribute the ball. However, Chelsea cannot afford to allow Christensen to sit on the bench for too long.
Everyone saw Pep Guardiola single him out for praise after last season’s defeat to Manchester City. The Spaniard and many other top managers would gladly take Christensen, who may be tempted to leave if his opportunities at Chelsea do not increase.
