The three players Chelsea need to consider re-signing in 2024, one has a buy back clause

Chelsea have become infamous for selling some of their young players too soon, including talents who have come through the club’s academy.

Tino Livramento is just one recent example, with the defender now thriving at Newcastle United following his move from Southampton during the summer.

The 21-year-old has really contributed to Eddie Howe’s side this season, making 12 appearances in the Premier League and playing at both right-back and left-back. With all of the injuries Chelsea have had in the full-back position, he would have been a great player to have around.

Having just joined Newcastle, it is unlikely that the Blues will be able to bring him back, but here are three other former players they should consider re-signing in 2024.

Marc Guehi

According to the Evening Standard, Chelsea want to add another centre-back to their squad. With that in mind, then, Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi is one name that should be at the top of their list.

The 23-year-old, who left Chelsea for Palace in 2021, has really established himself in the Premier League over the last couple of seasons, becoming a mainstay in his side’s backline.

Guehi is quite a modern-day defender, extremely comfortable on the ball. During the 2022/23 campaign, he completed 59.5 passes per game, which was the second-highest average in the Eagles’ squad (WhoScored).

Now an England international boasting a significant amount of Premier League experience, he could be a great option for Chelsea next month or in the summer. Alan Pardew thinks the Palace star is good enough to start every week for the Blues.

Fikayo Tomori

With Chelsea seemingly looking to sign a new central defender, Guehi’s England team-mate Fikayo Tomori is another name that is also worth considering.

He has really improved since leaving his boyhood club for AC Milan a couple of years ago.

In fact, Tomori is now easily one of Milan’s best defenders, if not the best. He is making 1.9 tackles per game in Serie A this season. Davide Calabria is the only defender in Stefano Pioli’s squad with a better average (WhoScored).

Tammy Abraham

As well as a defender, Chelsea also look keen on signing a new centre-forward as they continue to be heavily linked with Napoli’s Victor Osimhen.

Osimhen is a world-class striker, scoring 31 goals in all competitions last term. However, if Chelsea cannot land the Nigerian or any of their other main forward targets, Tammy Abraham would not be the worst alternative in the world.

The 26-year-old departed the Blues for AS Roma in 2021 and had a terrific debut campaign at the Stadio Olimpico. He netted 27 times in 53 outings, helping Jose Mourinho’s side to win the Europa Conference League.

As per The Athletic, Chelsea have a £69m buy-back clause that they can trigger if they want to bring their former striker back to Stamford Bridge.
