Todd Boehly must be kicking himself at £5m transfer blunder that could now cost Chelsea Champions League football

Transfer activity under the new ownership at Chelsea is certainly looked on a lot more positively now than when they first took over the club.

The scattergun approach of signing once great names who are perhaps past their best is a thing of the past, and Chelsea are now keen on having quality options competing for every position on the pitch.

One of the roles this is the case is goalkeeper, however Robert Sanchez has maintained the trust of manager Enzo Maresca for the Premier League fixtures.

Chelsea fans have not always been impressed by Sanchez, particularly when he is in possession with the ball at his feet.

Todd Boehly regretting Strasbourg selling Matz Sels to Chelsea’s direct rivals

The other sides who are competing for a top four place this season can all boast a class goalkeeper, and that is the case for Nottingham Forest and Matz Sels.

It was a year ago that the shot stopper made the move to the City Ground for a fee of just £5m, with him moving from BlueCo owned Strasbourg.

Chelsea and the Ligue 1 side have a close relation, with the latter currently benefitting from the likes of Andrey Santos and Djordje Petrovic on loan.

However, no effort was made to keep Sels in the system, and there will now surely be regrets that the ownership sold him to a side who are now a direct rival to Chelsea.

Forest currently sit in second in the Premier League, above the Blues and holding a real chance at finishing in the top four.

They impressed greatly in a 1-1 draw with Liverpool this week, where Sels was the star man following his six saves.

While Chelsea fans have been left disappointed with their goalkeeping options this season, the same cannot be said for Forest.

Sels is arguably the best performing goalkeeper in the Premier League this season, and the stats back up just how good he has been.

Chelsea are never shy of bringing in a player on the cheap, with Marc Guiu joining for a minor fee over the summer. Joe Cole is one of many who think Guiu was a bargain.

However, it feels like they missed a trick not looking at Sels, especially when he was part of the multi-club model already.

They now risk falling out of the Champions League places due to a poor run of form, whilst Forest continue to show they are serious contenders to qualify for European football this season.
