‘World-class’ Chelsea player really has a point to prove in Conference League vs Panathinaikos

Chelsea have the chance to rotate their starting squad again when they are back in action tomorrow night in the Conference League.

The Blues will be looking to follow on from their strong start in the group stages as they make the trip to Greece to take on Panathinaikos.

Enzo Maresca has frequently changed almost his entire side from the one that features in the Premier League for cup games.

A number of changes were made to the side that took on Liverpool at the weekend, with Romeo Lavia impressing at Anfield.

Enzo Fernandez needs big performance for Chelsea in Conference League

The inclusion of the Belgian saw Enzo Fernandez drop to the bench, with him also being one of those who returned late from international duty.

However, it would be fair to say that the World Cup winner has not been at his best this season, and the levels set by partner Moises Caicedo have only made that more obvious.

Darren Bent stated he preferred the look of Lavia and Caicedo in midfield, and Fernandez now has a point to prove to show he should be one of the first names on the teamsheet.

Opposition player Mateo Joseph described Fernandez as ‘world-class’ last season, although Chelsea fans are still waiting to see the best from a player they smashed their club-record fee to sign nearly two years ago.

Fernandez underrated this season?

Some would argue that the role Fernandez is playing is actually underrated under Maresca, with him cropping up in areas high up the pitch that actually allow him to influence play without even being on the ball.

Against Panathinaikos, Chelsea will expect to dominate possession, a game that on paper the Argentine would be a key factor in.

He is likely to be featuring alongside Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in midfield, with the Englishman another player looking to prove he should be considered for more minutes since his summer switch.
