Some Chelsea fans on social media were upset by Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel’s decision to bench Ben Chilwell once again for Sunday’s clash against Tottenham Hotspur.
The 24-year-old featured in 42 games for Chelsea in all competitions last season. Now, he is still waiting to make his first start of the season.
His seven-minute cameo in the win over Zenit St. Petersburg a few days ago was the only appearance for the Blues so far.
Having previously said the left-back was “in the race” for the starting spot, Tuchel surprisingly decided to stick with Marcos Alonso.
To be fair, the Spaniard has done quite well and arguably deserves to keep his place. But Chilwell’s lack of minutes seems to irritate some Chelsea fans on Twitter.
Here are a few fan reactions to the line-up announcement ahead of today’s game.
Chilwell played a key role in last season’s Champions League-winning campaign, and these fans understandably question how things have taken a turn for the worse so quickly for the defender.
Considering Chelsea tried to offload Alonso — by offering him to Inter Milan as part of a potential deal for Romelu Lukaku, according to the striker himself (via HLN), it is a surprise that he is now virtually the first-choice left-back.
