'Simply no': Tuchel says he will drop £30m Chelsea player tomorrow to rest him
Thomas Tuchel has confirmed in his Tuesday press conference that Chelsea player N’Golo Kante will be axed from the squad tomorrow for the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.
The Blues travel to London rivals Brentford on Wednesday night for a domestic cup fixture.
Tuchel has shared some important news ahead of the midweek fixture that may massively delight opponents Brentford, though.
He’s revealed that he won’t be risking Kante by playing him in the Carabao Cup. The German boss intends to drop the £30million midfielder and give him some rest by leaving him on the sidelines.
“What we did with N’Golo Kante [playing him for 90 minutes against Wolves] was close to being irresponsible. Will he be involved now in the squad against Brentford? No. Simply no… We will now give him time to recover and prepare him for the Aston Villa match,” Tuchel said.
Chelsea can’t lose Kante again
Of course, Chelsea stand a much better chance if he’s involved tomorrow.
However, Tuchel is playing it smart with one of the club’s elite players.
The Frenchman completed 90 minutes at the weekend in the Premier League match against Wolverhampton Wanderers, which was a major risk given his recent absence through injury.
He was outstanding after being thrown into action against Wolves, as he played for longer than originally intended.
It’s an important cup tie against a strong opponent in Brentford, but they can’t afford to lose 30-year-old star Kante for an extended period again.
Chelsea are going to suffer a drop off on the running statistics without him on the field.
