Thomas Tuchel has confessed that Chelsea star Jorginho does look “quite tired” ahead of today’s game against Aston Villa.

The Blues host Villa in Saturday’s 5:30pm kick-off in the Premier League.

Jorginho, 29, is in contention to play for Chelsea as they look to build on a positive start to the season.

But, the £110,000-a-week central midfielder is back in London after starting all three of Italy’s World Cup qualifiers over the international break period.

With N’Golo Kante missing against Villa through injury, it looks like Tuchel can pick two from three to start in the centre of the park.

Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic, along with new summer signing Saul Niguez, are the individuals in question.

Tuchel has raised a slight concern about his Italian playmaker, though:

“Jorgi can never say no when Italy calls, never say no when they play. Even if they are 5-0 up he wants every ball and runs. So he is quite tired,” Tuchel said.

Chelsea can afford Jorginho rest

It’s going to be a tough game today against Villa, but perhaps this is a match to rest Jorginho given the Champions League campaign kickstarts next week.

There is no point risking such a key player when he’s entering a danger zone of potentially picking up an injury.

Chelsea still have the strength in depth to pick an in-form midfielder Kovacic alongside new signing Saul, who will surely be desperate to impress if he gets a Premier League debut at the weekend.

It’s been a hectic 2021 for Jorginho, which is why a bit of clever man-management from Tuchel with him makes sense.

This season is a marathon not a sprint.
