Chelsea loanee Ian Maatsen has been praised by Lancs Live for his performance for Burnley yesterday in their 2-1 win over Swansea.

The left-back scored two brilliant goals as Vincent Kompany’s side extended their lead at the top of the table.

The Dutchman has been enjoying an extremely prolific season as part of a team looking to make their return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

He has four goals and as many assists this season in the Championship, and he doubled his goal tally in a sensational victory away from home.

The 20-year-old struck an early free-kick to give the visitors the advantage, before a ferocious strike from range was too hot to handle for Swansea goalkeeper Steven Benda.

The performance saw him receive plenty of praise form Kompany, who will no doubt be relying on his Chelsea loanee as they look to secure promotion.

He was also credited by Lancs Live for his display. They said: “Superb free kick followed by powerful second and was resolute defensively.”

Maatsen himself has claimed in an interview that he was extremely keen to secure a loan move this season, obviously not fancying his prospects at breaking into the first team under Thomas Tuchel.

He is now going to be facing more competition than ever if he does return to Stamford Bridge. As well as Ben Chilwell, who is currently injured, the Blues added Marc Cucurella to their ranks over last summer.

While he didn’t get off to the best start in Blue, performances of late have been more impressive from the Spaniard.

Lewis Hall has now added his name to the list of players vying for a place in the team, with him being handed two starts before the World Cup.

He has since been promoted to full first team status, and although he is able to feature as a midfielder too, his presence will be yet another roadblock for Maatsen in his route to the Chelsea squad.
