Jamie Carragher loved the role Cole Palmer played in Chelsea’s first goal against Manchester City earlier today.
Cole Palmer blocked off Erling Haaland at a corner, allowing Thiago Silva to march in and nod home, and Jamie Carragher was quick to highlight what the 21-year-old did while commentating on the match for Sky Sports (12/11/2023 at 16:59).
After Silva’s equaliser, the Blues were able to take the lead thanks to Raheem Sterling, but City drew level before half-time after Manuel Akanji’s header.

Pep Guardiola’s men then found themselves in the lead again at the beginning on the second half after Haaland’s second goal of the game.
Cole Palmer’s role in Chelsea’s first goal
Carragher enjoyed Chelsea‘s set-piece routine for their first equaliser, which Palmer played a part in.
Speaking on Sky Sports, the former Liverpool defender said: “Just look at the role of Cole Palmer. He just blocks Haaland off and it’s just a delicate little header. But speaking about Cole Palmer, he just holds him off and he gets across, Thiago Silva, and also [Marc] Cucurella.”
Carragher later went on to add: “It’s something they’ve certainly worked on. The role of Cole Palmer and Cucurella at that near post to allow that man to get across and get a little, slight, delicate touch on it.”
Chelsea need to continue utilising their set pieces
Nicolas Jackson is currently on fire, with the 22-year-old having now scored four goals against Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur in his last two games.
The Senegal international and the Blues’ other attackers have not always been convincing this season, though.
It is why it would be great if Chelsea could make set pieces a weapon as the campaign goes on.
At this moment in time, however, not many Chelsea fans will be complaining about the likes of Jackson, Raheem Sterling and Palmer, who all got their names on the scoresheet this evening.
Mauricio Pochettino‘s men have another tough game after the international break, with a trip to St James’ Park to take on Newcastle United awaiting them.
But if they play like how they played against City, then there is a very good chance that they will return to Stamford Bridge with all three points.
Chelsea could also head to Tyneside with a fit Christopher Nkunku, who wants to be ready for that match after his injury.
