Nicolas Jackson helped relieve some pressure off his shoulders by scoring his second goal for the club and the winning strike.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side will now hope to carry this momentum from the cup into the Premier League, where they’re languishing 14th in the division table.
It was an evening where Cole Palmer put forward his case to be in the starting line-up far more often.
The 21-year-old attacking midfielder was a huge bright spark on the pitch for Chelsea before being substituted off in the final 15 minutes.
He registered his first assist for his new club with some real style, slotting a clever pass through a Brighton defender’s legs into the path of goalscorer Jackson.
It certainly wasn’t vintage this evening from a Blues side that did huff and puff at times, but that winning feeling is that matters for supporters who’ve missed it.

The former Manchester City talent was busy throughout by getting on the ball in plenty of central positions, with his eye for a pass making him a huge plus point.
We’d certainly like to see plenty more of the left-footed playmaker in the next few games, so his name should be in the line-up on Monday night for the Premier League clash against Fulham.
