6 definitely seems to be Chelsea Ladies’ magical number at the start of this season as the Blues comfortably dispatched of Yeovil Ladies in what was their third 6-0 victory in four league games this year. Chelsea continued the dominance they showed before the international break as they increased their goal tally to 19 and are still yet to concede a goal. Yeovil Ladies manager Jamie Sherwood had changed the team’s formation to try and deal with the Blues but it was to no avail as Chelsea won comfortably as was expected.
Chelsea lined up in a slightly varied system, they played in a 3-3-2-2 shape with Crystal Dunn and Hannah Blundell in the wing back positions. Ji and Aluko, who was making her first start of the season, were the front two with Karen Carney and 19 year old Erin Cuthbert just behind them in support.
Chelsea started the match as they meant to go on, within one minute they had a great chance to take the lead. Crystal Dunn speeding down the left and crossing in for Cuthbert who had found herself in some space, unfortunately she could only head the ball wide. The Blues didn’t have to wait long for their first goal, the clock was showing 7 minutes when roles were reversed and Cuthbert managed to trick her way into the box before pulling the ball back to give Dunn the easiest of tap ins.
Chelsea were finding so much joy down Yeovil’s right hand side and continued to exploit that area of the pitch, creating chance after chance. Yeovil couldn’t resist for any longer and 20 minutes in, the floodgates opened. Chelsea scored 3 goals in 5 minutes to completely put the game to bed. Aluko, Carney and Dunn getting her second goal with another tap in made it 4-0 in the first half.
The second half started in much of the same fashion as the first as again within a minute Chelsea had a great opportunity to extend their lead further. Crystal Dunn found herself with time in the inside left position and she struck a fierce effort against the crossbar, the American was so unlucky not to get on the score sheet for the third time. Chelsea’s fifth goal came out of absolutely nothing as Karen Carney let rip from 30 yards out into the far corner. The final goal of the game completed a hat trick of braces as Aluko got her second goal after clinically volleying in Karen Carney’s free kick.
Chelsea remain at the top of the league with four wins from four, but they haven’t shaken off Manchester City Women who also have a 100% record.
Player of the Match: Crystal Dunn (Chelsea) – The winger got the chance to display her attacking qualities even though she was playing at wing back. A threat throughout the match, managing to get herself 2 goals and also an assist.
