Chelsea were not able to make it back-to-back wins against Newcastle United last night.

Chelsea went into their Carabao Cup tie with Newcastle United having just beaten them 2-1 in the Premier League.

This time, however, they tasted defeat after losing 2-0 at St James’ Park, with all of the damage being done in the first half.

Alan Shearer criticised Chelsea for gambling too much at the back, which resulted in Newcastle scoring the first of their two goals.

Enzo Fernandez and Chelsea lacked control

After the game, Enzo Maresca was asked about Enzo Fernandez‘s performance specifically.

In response, the Chelsea manager said that Fernandez and his team in general did not show enough control after Alexander Isak’s opener.

Speaking to football.london and other outlets in his post-match press conference, Maresca said: “I said, for me, we lost the game because of 10 minutes after we conceded the first goal.

“After that, for 10 minutes, we lost the control. After that, we need more control but it’s not only from Enzo, it’s in general.”

Chelsea can still win a cup this season

Defeat against Newcastle has seen Chelsea eliminated from the Carabao Cup in the fourth round of the competition.

That is one trophy Maresca’s men will not be winning, but they can still end the season with some silverware.

The Blues, of course, are currently competing in the Conference League and are by far the strongest team in the competition. It is a tournament that they should be winning easily.

There is the FA Cup as well, with Chelsea entering it in the third round at the start of the new year.

The club’s main objective will be qualifying for the Champions League. But with the team that they have and their history of winning trophies, supporters are going to want to see their players get their hands on some silverware.

Paul Scholes thinks Maresca deserves some credit for the job he has done at Stamford Bridge so far. The 44-year-old probably does, with Chelsea just outside of the top four at the moment, but he can get so much more if his side manage to win something this term.
