Enzo Maresca has been speaking tactics following Chelsea’s win against Aston Villa on Sunday.

Aston Villa travelled to Stamford Bridge, hoping to end a run of seven games without a victory in all competitions.

However, that run was extended to eight after they lost 3-0 to Chelsea. Villa knew it was going to be a hard game, with Unai Emery praising the job that Maresca has done in west London before the match.

That win has left Chelsea in third, nine points behind league leaders Liverpool, so some will feel that Maresca‘s men are actually in the title race as things stand.

Enzo Maresca’s method for scoring goals

This season, only Tottenham Hotspur have scored more goals than Chelsea in the Premier League, with the Blues, Liverpool and Arsenal all on 26, one fewer than Spurs.

For Maresca, it is simple. Getting into the box is how you score goals, and that is the instruction that the Chelsea manager has been giving to his attackers.

“Almost all goals happen inside the box, so we need the two wingers, the two attacking midfielders, the No.9, inside the box,” Maresca was quoted as saying by Chelsea’s official website after his side’s triumph over Villa. “Players inside the box is the only way to try to score goals.”

Maresca has also been instructing Chelsea to press high, with that being how they scored their first goal after some great work by Marc Cucurella.

Chelsea’s goals conceded

Clearly, then, Maresca has got this Chelsea team firing. Now it is all about striking a balance.

While the Blues were able to keep a clean sheet against Villa, it was only their third of the season in the Premier League.

In total, they have conceded 14 goals, which is not terrible. But Liverpool have only let in eight, showing what Maresca’s men are up against if they are thinking about the title.

Chances are Chelsea are only thinking about finishing in the top four. Qualifying for the Champions League would have been their primary objective heading into this season. But title talk is going to be hard to escape if they continue picking up results.
