Chelsea’s poor discipline cost them for the second Premier League game in a row as they slipped to a very disappointing defeat against Brighton.
Last weekend, Robert Sanchez’s red card against Manchester United led to the 2-1 setback at Old Trafford. Unfortunately, it was a similar story on Saturday afternoon at Stamford Bridge.
Even though the Blues were in front at half time via Enzo Fernandez’s goal, they eventually suffered a 3-1 loss at home to Brighton because of a nightmare second period.
Without a doubt, the contest changed when Trevoh Chalobah was sent off for his challenge early in the second half. Afterwards, Brighton clinched three points with goals from Danny Welbeck (two) and Maxim De Cuyper.

Jason Cundy’s instant reaction as Chelsea lose to Brighton
Jason Cundy was fuming with his instant reaction to Chelsea’s crushing result at home against Brighton.
Cundy said via Chelsea’s official app (5:00pm, 27 September): “This is a bad result. The whole second half has been an absolute disaster. This has been a terrible second half. I did not see this coming at half time.”
As a result, Enzo Maresca’s side sit on a very underwhelming points tally of eight points from six league games. It doesn’t get any easier because they host leaders Liverpool next weekend, too.
Chelsea’s board aren’t focused on building a Premier League-winning squad because they want a side that can evolve into serial winners in the future. Well, they should be worried that the current group could face another season where they are fighting just to get into the Champions League.
The team’s form since returning from the September international break now looks extremely concerning.

Horrid Chelsea run against Brighton
It is quite remarkable that Brighton have now beaten Chelsea three times in 2025.
- Chelsea 1-3 Brighton, 27 September 2025 (Premier League)
- Brighton 3-0 Chelsea, 14 February 2025 (Premier League)
- Brighton 2-1 Chelsea, 8 February 2025 (FA Cuo)
The Blues have now lost three consecutive matches against the Seagulls. It will taste even sweeter for Brighton supporters because they keep seeing their high-profile players sold to Stamford Bridge, too.
The next times they meet will be at the Amex Stadium on 26 April in the reverse league fixture.
