Chelsea were able to beat Benfica 1-0 on Tuesday night in their second Champions League game of the season.

An own goal from Richard Rios helped Chelsea to bounce back from their 3-1 defeat to Bayern Munich on matchday 1.

Benfica’s match-up against the Blues saw Jose Mourinho return to Stamford Bridge.

Before the game, Mourinho lauded Pedro Neto, hailing his compatriot as one of the best wide attackers in football.

Jose Mourinho blows kiss to Chelsea fans

After managing two of Chelsea’s biggest English rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United, Mourinho has not always received a warm reception when returning to Stamford Bridge.

However, he did on Tuesday night, with Chelsea supporters singing his name during their Champions League tie. In return, the Special One blew a kiss to the home fans, a scene caught by Sky Sports reporter Dan Long.

“The Chelsea fans begin to sing Jose Mourinho’s name for the first time tonight,” Long shared early in the game. “He looks to his right, waves and blows a kiss. The love is mutual.”

As well as Neto, Mourinho also talked about Cole Palmer. The attacking midfielder missed the match, though, because of injury.

Where Jose Mourinho ranks himself among Chelsea’s best ever managers

Unlike Enzo Maresca and Thomas Tuchel, Mourinho never won any trophies outside of England while at Chelsea.

However, he did win three Premier League titles. As a result, the Portuguese is adamant that he is the best manager in the club’s history.

“I am the biggest one until someone wins four,” Mourinho told The Guardian and other outlets in his pre-match press conference.

For now, Mourinho seems safe. Maresca does not look capable of winning one title with this current Chelsea team, let alone four. The Blues have not finished first in the Premier League table since 2017.

Chelsea went into their game against Benfica with several players missing amid an injury crisis. The likes of Palmer, Liam Delap and Levi Colwill were all unavailable for selection.

Going forward, former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp wants to see an end to new tournaments, such as the Club World Cup, believing that it is having an impact on players’ fitness.
