National media in agreement about Reece James after England’s win over Croatia

Thomas Tuchel gave Reece James the nod for England’s World Cup opener against Croatia, operating first at right-back before moving into central midfield.

The win over Croatia was Reece James‘ debut at the World Cup, having cruelly missed out on previous major tournaments through injury.

There wasn’t too much to shout about from James. He kept things simple when in possession of the ball, often going backwards before moving forward and was rarely troubled defensively in the second half.

You could have an argument for criticising the Chelsea man’s positioning for both of Croatia’s goals, but he looked calm and collected when moved into the middle of midfield.

Reece James’ performance frowned upon for England

It’s clear from the reviews of the national media that there’s an agreement on the defensive improvements that Reece James needs to make, but he was positive in other areas.

The Telegraph5/10Failed to block off the run of Ivan Perisic for Croatia’s second goal. Showed ambition to run forwards and get into the penalty area, which was not easy with Pericic on his flank. He also put over a decent cross for Kane that Croatia did well to defend. But the Chelsea captain also wasted a free-kick.

Daily Mirror5/10He was exposed defensively by Croatia’s movement and threat down the flank. Poor free kick.

The Independent6/10His partnership with Madueke and Bellingham on the right was encouraging. Defensively, the connection with Konsa needs some work. Switched off for Croatia’s second equaliser. Moved into midfield for the final stages.
