Wycombe Wanderers 0-5 Chelsea (Wed 16 July, 19:45 BST)
A youthful Chelsea side looked impressive as they put five goals past Wycombe Wanderers, under the watchful eye of Jose Mourinho.
A first-half opener by Patrick Bamford set the pulses running with two months of no Chelsea action, and it was a sweetly-taken left-foot volley by the man who spent last season on loan at Derby County.
There was no letting up in the second half either, as a superb brace from Brown — and goals from old veterans John Terry and Branislav Ivanovic to boot — crushed Wycombe on Matt Bloomfield’s testimonial.
AFC Wimbledon 2-3 Chelsea (Sat 19 July, 15:00 BST)
Chelsea showed resolve to come from 2-0 behind to restore their 100% winning record of pre-season so far.
A goal conceded within 38 seconds gave the home side the advantage, and Chelsea’s deficit was doubled when a penalty was conceded with six minutes to go until the end of the first half.
But Chelsea’s stong attitude, and Jose Mourinho’s winning mentality was evident when he played five up front, plus sending Ivanovic as an emergency striker, as three goals — all assisted by Lewis Baker — in the last 16 minutes, from Salah and a Terry brace, salvaged some pride for Chelsea, and eradiated any Wimbledon hope of having any bragging rights.
RZ Pellets WAC 1-1 Chelsea (Wed 23 July, 18:30 BST)
Chelsea welcomed back Petr Cech and welcomed in new signing Filipe Luis as the Blues were held to a draw in Austria.
It was a goal-less first-half but RZ Pellets WAC took the lead early in the second, despite protestations from Petr Cech that he had just managed to prevent it from crossing the line. With no goal-line technology and replays inconclusive, a goal was awarded, denying Cech a clean sheet return.
Boga ensured Chelsea did not suffer a disappointing loss with a well-taken goal with just minutes remaining. Ivanovic was again sent forward as an emergency striker and was enough of a menacing presence to free up Boga from two defenders and the youngster slotted home calmly.
NK Olimpija Ljubljana 1-2 Chelsea (Sun 27 July, 16:15 BST)
Chelsea had to come from behind yet again but prevailed in the Slovenian heat thanks to goals from new boys Diego Costa and Kurt Zouma.
Olimpija Ljubljana took the shock lead when Nik Kapun latched onto the ball expertly five minutes before the interval. It sat up invitingly for the 20-year-old, who fired past Delac.
But then came the newbies to impress. Cesc Fabregas’ weighted pass needed Diego Costa to run powerfully onto it and then unleash a strong shot, but it was no tall order for the former Atletico Madrid hitman. It was a classic Didier Drogba goal, who was watching on from the sidelines.
Kurt Zouma improvised to grab what turned out to be the winner, but the lead could have been extended. Ivanovic’s toe-poke was initially awarded a goal by the referee, only for him to change his mind, angering Jose Mourinho.
What will have angered him even more followed soon after, when Fernando Torres inexplicable missed the target from two yards. It is a remarkable fall from glory for the Spaniard who surely will be forced out this summer.
Vitesse Arnhem 1-3 Chelsea (Wed 30 July, 18:30 BST)
It was more impressive work from Chelsea’s summer signings, as Cesc Fabregas scored one and Diego Costa played a big part in all three, as Chelsea cantered to a victory.
An energetic start by Chelsea brought about a goal inside three minutes, when Diego Costa raced through and unselfishly teed up Mohamed Salah.
More unselfish play followed for Chelsea’s third, with Costa again opting to seek Matic despite being through on goal himself. The Spaniard is showing signs he not only can find the back of the net, but he can find team-mates when necessary too.
Sandwiched in-between was the goal of the game. Cesc Fabregas is the successor to Frank Lampard, who for so long was Chelsea’s dead-ball specialist, but the former Arsenal ace proved no less capable, swinging a delicious free-kick in from 25 yards.
Vitesse did manage to score a consolation late on when Djurdjevic headed home past substitute Beeney, but the result was already settled by then.
Werder Bremen 3-0 Chelsea (Sun 3 Aug, 16:00 BST)
Chelsea suffered an embarrassing 3-0 loss to Werder Bremen in their toughest pre-season test so far.
The powerful German outfit, boasting former Blue Franco di Santo in their line-up, outclassed the Londoners in an afternoon to forget, but for the re-appearance of Didier Drogba in a Chelsea shirt.
John Terry’s handball brought about the game’s first penalty, from which Elia scored. 20 minutes later and Obraniak doubled Bremen’s advantage, heading brilliantly past debutant Thibaut Courtois.
Chelsea chances were few and far between and the match was wrapped up with a minute remaining, in similar fortuitous fashion as the first. Ake’s inch-perfect tackle was deemed a penalty and Felix Kroos tucked it home.
Fenerbahçe 0-2 Chelsea (Fri 8 Aug, 19:30 BST)
A short, 45-minute charity match say Chelsea run out 2-0 winners thanks to goals from Diego Costa and Branislav Ivanovic.
This fixture was a late addition to the pre-season programme, but you could see it had the benefits, with a shorter game meaning Chelsea had to be more productive in a time-limited situation.
Instantly the Blues got going and could have been ahead through inside 20 seconds had Oscar’s ball been better for Diego Costa. No matter for the Spaniard as 24 minutes later, Costa turned magnificently and drove past four defenders before calmly slotting the ball home. Chelsea fans shall hope to expect more of the same in the coming season.
One has to credit a superb Petr Cech save moments before that goal, but after it the Blues found their rhythm. Newly-crowned world champions Andre Schurrle saw his free-kick parried, only into the path of Ivanovic to steer home the game’s second.
Besiktas 1-0 Chelsea (Fri 8 Aug, 20:30 BST)
Chelsea lose the second game of this mini-tournament for charity in Turkey, thanks to a late winner by Gulum.
Following on from the earlier win against Fenerbahçe, a draw or win would have given Chelsea the title, of course not forgetting the main purpose of this mini-tournament.
And whilst 0-0 was very much on the cards, it all changed two minutes from the end of this abridged match. Cech did expertly to block a Demba Ba shot, who managed to race past his former colleagues and leeave Gary Cahill on the floor, but the ensuing corner was handled poorly and the ball bounced kindly to Gulum, who could not miss from two yards out.
It means Chelsea miss out on the season’s first trophy on offer, but the performance and tactical experiments would surely have pleased manager Mourinho.
Ferencvaros 1-2 Chelsea (Sun 10 Aug, 19:45 BST)
Chelsea win the opening match at the new Groupama Arena as goals by Ramires and Fabregas were enough to see past Ferencvaros.
A bright start for the Blues was blunted by Zoltan Gera’s fine take 17 minutes into the match. The former West Brom player lost Kurt Zouma and got onto the end of a fantastic cross to beat Petr Cech. It sent the fans of Ferencvaros, who last season placed third in the Hungarian league, into raptures.
Chelsea’s attack petered out thereafter for the rest of the first half but got going very quickly in the second. Ramires was fortunate to get the ball go his way after a fluky deflection, but still had lots of work to do, controlling the bouncing ball on his chest before leathering it, left-footed, into the top of the goal from 25 yards.
Oscar should have scored six minutes later but it was another midfield magician — Cesc Fabregas — who grabbed the winner, and in superb fashion too. Taking up a harmless position on the right-wing, the ex-Arsenal player went on a mazy run to beat a host of Ferencvaros defenders before toe-poking it home, as Chelsea return to England on a winning note.
Chelsea 2-0 Real Sociedad (Tue 12 Aug, 19:45 BST)
Chelsea cruised past Read Sociedad as the Blues end their pre-season run with a win.
An electric start saw Diego Costa hit a seven-minute brace. Jose Mourinho had asked fans to turn up early to welcome his first-team one-by-one, and the rapturous applause for Diego Costa clearly pumped his adrenaline. A fine strike after just 57 seconds was followed minutes later when Andre Schurrle’s shot hit the post and Costa was the right man in the right place to tap in his second.
The sell-out crowd, in Chelsea’s first home pre-season friendly since 2006, would go on to see more action, but no more goals. Late substitutions allowed youngsters like Andreas Christensen, Zouma and van Ginkel game-time but this is Mourinho’s last experiment as we now head into our opening Premier League fixture next Monday, away to Burnley.
