Chelsea’s Carney Chukwuemeka was finally handed his first minutes of the season during the club’s Carabao Cup success on Tuesday night.

The Blues put on a clinical display yesterday to thrash League Two leaders Barrow 5-0 at home in the Carabao Cup third round.

There were a few eyebrows raised when head coach Enzo Maresca made 11 changes in his team selection, but we’ve just seen how deep the Chelsea squad actually is this season.

For Carney Chukwuemeka, he got his first action of the 2024/25 campaign with a late cameo off the bench. In fact, it was the first time that the 20-year-old attacking midfielder was even in a matchday squad this term.

Journalist Simon Phillips recently claimed via Substack that Chukwuemeka had his heart set on joining Crystal Palace in the summer, but he’s ended up staying at Chelsea and has a huge fight on his hands to play regular football.

Carney Chukwuemeka makes an impact

Chukwuemeka only entered the cup tie against Barrow in the 76th minute, but it was still enough time for him to remind everyone of his quality.

Remarkably, Mozo Football records that the attacking midfielder finished the game joint top in the statistic for the most chances created (two).

Chukwuemeka certainly made a memorable impact in such a short space of time. Hopefully, it’s going to lead to more opportunities in the upcoming fixtures, particularly the cup ties in domestic and European competitions.

The 20-year-old English playmaker slotted into a central No.10 position against Barrow, replacing the impressive Joao Felix.

Chukwuemeka looked like he’d never been away by displaying some powerful running to drive forward in possession.

We think he’s got a lot to give this Blues squad with his dynamic dribbling and creativity. However, it’s quite apparent that he’s slipped down the pecking order since Maresca arrived in the summer.

Chelsea competition

Chukwuemeka’s got the versatility to play in a No.10 role or as a box-to-box central midfielder, but his pathway into the Chelsea XI looks blocked regardless.

In terms of the advanced creative role, Felix made a great case for himself to play more in midweek. Many Chelsea fans loved Felix’s performance against Barrow. Also, Cole Palmer is the talisman at Stamford Bridge and is playing in the central pocket under Maresca.

Meanwhile, Enzo Fernandez and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall have emerged as the two No.8s competing for one starting position.
