There were some surprise inclusions in Calum McFarlane’s starting line-up for Chelsea’s FA Cup semi-final tie against Leeds United, including Alejandro Garnacho.

After a poor performance in Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat to his former club Manchester United, Garnacho has received a plethora of criticism.

Since then, it has even been reported that Chelsea could look to replace Garnacho with Nico Williams. However, McFarlane still decided to go with the winger at Wembley.

Three changes…

McFarlane ignored the noise surrounding Garnacho and included him in his Chelsea XI for the Leeds clash because of his past Wembley heroics.

In his last two appearances at the England national team’s stadium, the 21-year-old has scored two goals, including in the 2024 FA Cup final, which saw United beat rivals Manchester City 2-1.

When asked about his decision to include Garnacho in the team, McFarlane told TNT Sports: “Ale’s got talent. He’s scored, is it twice in his last two games at Wembley? So we’re hoping he can repeat that form and he’s shown this season at times that he does have that level.”

Garnacho’s performances in the cup competitions have actually been good this season. For example, in the Carabao Cup, the Argentina international scored four goals in as many appearances.

It is the Premier League where Garnacho has really struggled. He has only found the back of the net once despite May only being around the corner.

If the former United star remains at Stamford Bridge, that is obviously one area where he will have to improve.

As Chelsea continue to be linked with other left wingers, though, his short time in west London really could be coming to an end.

As well as Williams, Chelsea have also been linked with Yan Diomande. Reported interest from Liverpool, though, could complicate any potential move for him.

While the Reds will likely be able to offer the RB Leipzig attacker Champions League football, Chelsea are almost certain to be in a position where they will not be able to do that. McFarlane’s men currently find themselves in eighth in the Premier League table.
