‘We’ll have talks’: Low says Chelsea will make last minute decision over whether two players start tomorrow
Chelsea are yet to decide whether Edouard Mendy or Kepa Arrizabalaga will start tomorrow against Al Hilal.
The Blues will compete tomorrow in the Club World Cup semi-final against Al Hilal, with the final taking place a few days later this weekend.
It’s a trophy that’s not yet in Chelsea’s trophy cabinet, so it’s a chance for this squad of players to create another piece of their own history.
Chelsea’s first-team assistant coach Zsolt Low, who took media duty on Tuesday in the absence of Thomas Tuchel, says a decision is yet to be made on who will start in goal on Wednesday.
Kepa, 27, has done an excellent job in net during the last few weeks.
However, Mendy is due to reunite with the Chelsea squad today after winning the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal at the weekend.
Low says that Chelsea will speak with goalkeeper coaches before making the call:
“Mendy will arrive probably later today or tomorrow and we’ll see how tired he is. He has to arrive first, we have to check him and talk to him. We’ll see if it’s possible he plays, maybe,” Low said.
“We have two amazing goalkeepers. Mendy made a fantastic performance to win the Africa Cup and be best goalkeeper but Kepa does an amazing job with us here. In last game he saved an important penalty and is in good shape. We’ll have talks with the goalkeeping coaches before deciding.”
Chelsea should go strong
For Chelsea, it’s an opportunity to win another piece of silverware.
Yes, there may be an opportunity to bring Mendy back into the side after his success with the intentional side.
However, Kepa’s done a decent job as the understudy.
There could be no argument if Kepa starts tomorrow, as he’s more than held his own in net.
Mendy’s heroics can’t be overstated, though, and he will be going into future games sky high with his confidence.
