Chelsea fans may look at their current striking options and look wistfully at other clubs’ number 9’s. However, the Blues’ renowned crop of youth players contains Daishawn Redan, a 17-year-old Dutch striker of such talent that he is already being tipped to become one of the world’s best.
Chelsea beat Manchester United to the signing of Redan from Ajax last year. He is a very quick player who is equally strong with either foot.
He moved to Chelsea and introduced himself in style for Chelsea’s under 18’s in last season’s UEFA Youth League. He only started playing during the latter stages of the competition but he scored four goals during the knockout stages as Chelsea reached the final.
He has started this season similarly well playing for Chelsea’s under 23 team in the Premier League 2. He has four goals in seven appearances this season. Not bad for a young man playing against players up to six years his senior.
For the Dutch national youth teams, his numbers are even more impressive. For the Netherlands under 17’s team, he has scored 20 goals in 25 appearances. For the Netherlands under 19’s, he has scored seven goals in just four matches.
Redan is making a name for himself already as a goal machine. As we know, it is difficult in the extreme for youth products to make it into the Chelsea first team. Nevertheless, goals are a persuasive currency, making Redan a striker to keep an eye on.
