Pat Nevin hails Ruben Loftus-Cheek after Chelsea win v Southampton

Pat Nevin says Blues star played his best ever half of football for Chelsea in 3-1 Southampton win

Pat Nevin claimed today that Ruben Loftus-Cheek delivered his best 45 minutes ever as a Chelsea player in the 3-1 win over Southampton.

The Blues picked up three valuable points in Saturday’s Premier League fixture at home to Southampton.

Trevoh Chalobah’s first-half header from a corner put Chelsea ahead.

James Ward-Prowse’s converted penalty on the hour mark made it 1-1, but the Saints captain was sent off afterwards for a slide tackle on Jorginho.

That left Timo Werner to be the match-winner with his 84th minute goal in front of the Stamford Bridge crowd. In addition, Ben Chilwell chipped in with an 89th minute strike to add gloss to the scoreline.

It means that Thomas Tuchel’s side now go into the international break in an upbeat mood. The victory against Southampton has come after back-to-back defeats against Manchester City and Juventus.

Nevin was left majorly impressed by Loftus-Cheek during the match.

He even said at half time during Chelsea’s Saturday result that the first-half performance from Loftus-Cheek was the best he’s ever seen from him.

“That is Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s best 45 minutes for Chelsea ever!” Nevin told BBC Radio 5 Live.

Loftus-Cheek rediscovering his mojo against Southampton

Loftus-Cheek played 82 minutes in today’s match and he justified the decision from the manager to start him.

The 25-year-old central midfielder produced some excellent moments on the ball as he looked to play forward with real pace and precision.

His confidence was certainly on show with the way he looked to be positive. Also, he assisted the opening goal with his flicked on header from a corner.

It’s extremely tough competition for him to keep himself in this Chelsea XI, but he’s done himself no harm with another positive performance.

Chelsea move top of the league

Chelsea have jumped to top of the Premier League table after clinching three points in dramatic fashion against Southampton.

They had two goals ruled out by VAR in the first half, but eventually they sealed three points late on.

Liverpool or Manchester City may still overtake the Blues before the weekend ends, but 16 points from the opening seven league games is a signal of intent.
