Chelsea loanee Bashir Humphreys was in action on New Year’s Day as Swansea City beat West Brom in the Championship.

Swansea started 2024 with a 1-0 home win yesterday over West Brom.

Bashir Humphreys, who’s just 20, is a Chelsea loanee currently enjoying his time during a season-long loan at Swansea.

The young English defender is starting regularly and learning his craft in first-team football.

We’ve seen so many young players over the years thrive in England’s second division before growing into big names at Stamford Bridge., including the likes of Reece James and Levi Colwill.

Media impressed

Local media rated Humphreys’ latest performance for Swansea this week.

The Chelsea-owned talent is a ball-playing centre-back with so much quality.

Wales Online wrote: “Bashir Humphreys 7. Tidy on the ball for much of the afternoon. Read things pretty well and made some really good contributions at the back. Another to stand up well at the end.”

Bashir Humphreys for Swansea

Let’s hope that this season’s loan move can act as a springboard for Humphreys into Chelsea’s main group. Incidentally, he’s already made two senior appearances for the Blues.

The England Under-21 international ticks a lot of boxes as a modern day centre-half, but the competition for places at Stamford Bridge is stiff.

Humphreys previously shared that Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino wanted to keep him around the Blues squad during this 2023/24 season.

He said via Swansea’s X account: “I had a pretty long conversation with the manager. They kind of said ‘look, we’re gonna do what’s best for you here, not what’s best for us’ because they wanted me to stay there, be in and around it and play some games.

“But I said ‘look I wanna go somewhere where I can play games and get better and improve’.”

It sounds like there may be a future for Humphreys at Chelsea after all.
