‘A huge threat’: ESPN pundit thinks 23-year-old Chelsea player should definitely score more headed goals

Craig Burley suggests that Chelsea’s Kai Havertz should score more headers.

Havertz, 23, is a versatile attacker that plays in a variety of forward positions.

The Germany international has spent a lot of time recently in a No.9 role for his club side, but a performance last night in the No.10 pocket for his country was certainly eye-opening.

He scored twice in Germany’s 3-3 draw against England at Wembley Stadium, so it’ll be interesting to know what his club boss, Graham Potter, made of his contribution as an advanced playmaker.

Havertz should score more headers

ESPN pundit Burley discussed Havertz’s role following his international performance, claiming he’s better when he’s behind or next to a striker.

Also, he highlighted the fact that the Chelsea attacker should score more headers. He didn’t convert with his head last night, but the No.10 position definitely allows you to arrive in the box later than playing the lone forward role.

Incidentally, seven of his 24 Chelsea goals since he joined from Bayer Leverkusen have been with his head.

Burley told ESPN: “I personally think he’ll look better with a second striker or somebody around him. I think he needs somebody to take the load off him so he can also float around a little bit. He doesn’t have to be that kingpin through the middle where everything has to go through. He can float a little bit wider.

“If you watched him at Leverkusen, and I don’t know how many headed goals he’s got at Chelsea, but it seemed to me that every time the ball came in the box at Leverkusen he was a huge threat.

“I think if he had somebody up there beside him or close to him, they could work better together. We know Thomas Tuchel didn’t want to do that, and I have my doubts that Graham Potter will want to do that as well.”

The truth is Chelsea fans still haven’t really seen the version of Havertz that was tearing up the Bundesliga when he was even younger.

The 6ft 3in attacker has all the individual ability in the world, including in the air, but Chelsea are still trying to get the best from him now two years into his time at Stamford Bridge.

Hopefully, Potter can be the man to unlock the youngster’s full potential.

Burley’s point about Havertz’s headed ability is an interesting one because he’s shown in the past his strength in that area.

The German left-footer has a great leap and clever movement, so let’s see if a partnership can unfold with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in Chelsea colours that allows for more headed goals.
