Tim Sherwood has delivered his verdict on Everton star Anthony Gordon by suggesting there’s so much for him to improve amid links to Chelsea.

Gordon, who’s a young rising Premier League talent, is strongly rumoured with a potential transfer to Stamford Bridge.

It’s been claimed that Chelsea are now willing to cough up as much as £60million for the Everton attacker after seeing previous bids turned down.

The 21-year-old has become a key starter for Frank Lampard’s side at Goodison Park, which is why the Blues are ready to spend big on him.

In fairness, the exciting youngster is yet to deliver too many huge moments in his short first-team career. Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea must see something special in him, though.

Tim Sherwood on Anthony Gordon

Sky Sports pundit Sherwood thinks that Everton’s academy graduate is still so far off the finished article as a player.

He reckons there’s a lot of work to do to justify anywhere near the colossal £60m price tag.

“If there is any position they don’t need anyone it’s probably in that one. It’s a kick in the teeth for the academy managers at Chelsea,” Sherwood said.

“Without being disrespectful to Gordon, I think he’s a good talent and he’s still developing, but they’ve got good talent in their academy. They are probably the most fruitful academy we’ve seen for the last 10 years.

“You are bringing someone in for an awful lot of money and blocking up the pathway for some of your talented young players. He’s not the finished article. He’s got a lot to do. I just believe it’s a scattergun approach Chelsea are making as regards to their recruitment. It’s not a position they actually need.”

It’s glaringly obvious that Gordon is still at the very early stages of his development, so you’re largely paying for potential if you spend a fortune.

His return of four goals and eight assists in 63 senior appearances for Everton is uninspiring.

He will need to find his feet very quickly and try improve his end product if he’s going to deal with everyone talking about a massive valuation.
