Chris Sutton thinks Thomas Tuchel missed a golden opportunity by not playing Timo Werner for Chelsea against Leeds United last weekend, speaking on BBC Radio Five Live.
Werner began on the Blues bench prior to their Premier League stalemate with Leeds at Elland Road.
It was an event that promised so much, but delivered so little.
Particularly on the goals front, which has often been the hallmark of matches involving Marcelo Bielsa’s side this season.
Only Crystal Palace, Southampton, West Bromwich Albion and Sheffield United have conceded more times in the league than Leeds.
This was a wasted chance for Chelsea to get some more names on the scoresheet.
None more so than Werner, whose striking woes have been well documented.
The £170,00 per-week (Spotrac) is on a run of scoring just once in 20 league games.
Sutton felt Tuchel was foolish by excluding Werner from his starting line-up against Leeds.
“It’s an issue he has to address at Chelsea, scoring goals,” admitted the former Blues forward.
“They haven’t scored enough. Being a centre forward is all about feeling confident. Playing consistently is so important.
“It will be extremely interesting how this pans out. If I was Timo Werner, I’d have wanted to play against Leeds. Same with (Olivier) Giroud. They all want to play. I thought that was a waste in many respects.
“A guy who has struggled and is such a threat. He brings so much to the team.
“But he has struggled for goals. His finishing has been woeful at times. That would’ve been another opportunity to get his confidence up.
“If you want to rest him, take him off after 65 minutes when he’s scored one.”
Werner did play the final 20 minutes in Yorkshire but hardly managed to establish himself.
This has largely been the story of his Chelsea career, apart from the fact he’s started most fixtures rather than being a substitute.
There would be no better time to end his drought when Tuchel’s team welcomes Atletico Madrid to Stamford Bridge in the Champions League tomorrow night.
Is it written in the stars for Werner? Chelsea will certainly hope so.
