Gabriel Agbonlahor believes Graham Potter must give his front three consistent game time to win more games, even if it’s at the expense of January signing Mykhailo Mudryk.
Mudryk’s last start for Chelsea was in the first-leg defeat against Dortmund almost a month ago.
Raheem Sterling’s injury return, as well as Potter’s recent decision to go back with a back-three formation — which uses three attackers, rather than four, all likely played a part.
Sterling’s recent performance proved that he deserves to be ahead in the pecking, too.
That said, the England international mostly operates on the right flank, while Felix plays on the left. So, it is the latter with whom Mudryk really competes for a spot.
Does Mudryk deserve more opportunity to prove himself? He certainly does, but Agbonlahor thinks that to win, Potter needs to allow his current front three to build chemistry.
“He [Potter] has to go forward now, stick with that team,” the former Aston Villa striker told talkSPORT when speaking about Chelsea’s starting eleven against Dortmund.
“Mudryk… Sorry, you’ve got to wait your time now.
“[You’d have] to stick with Felix, Havertz, and Sterling.
“Give them games after games, and I’m sure that Chelsea will start winning games in the Premier League.”
Obviously, Mudryk still offers a lot, especially in terms of pace, even as a substitute option.
He is also still adapting to a new league, so easing him into the team would be sensible.
But the Ukraine international is not the only Chelsea attacker whose desire to play could prove problematic for the manager.
Christian Pulisic, Hakim Ziyech, Mason Mount, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, David Datro Fofana, and Noni Madueke are also vying for three attacking spots in the team, in addition to the aforementioned names.
