Alan Shearer has described young Chelsea star Mason Mount as a “big-game” player as he praised the midfielder’s “outstanding” performances this season.
The 22-year-old has deservedly been named Chelsea player of the season by the club supporters — and it is easy to see why.
Chelsea have gone through ups and downs this season. From being at the top of the league at one point to Frank Lampard, followed by festive fixture slumps and a revival under new manager Thomas Tuchel.
According to Shearer, Mount has been the difference-maker under both managers.
“Mason Mount, one of the stand-out performers for Chelsea this season,” the former England international told Premier League’s YouTube channel.
“First under Lampard and now under Tuchel, he’s made things happen for Chelsea, creating most big chances for his side (13 big chances, seventh-most in PL).
“He’s also a big crosser of the ball and loves to take a shot.
“Where he could improve, however, is in converting those shots into goals. But he’s clearly high in confidence when it comes to pulling the trigger.
“He’s also a big-game player. And no more it’s evident than in the game against Liverpool [in March], where he was a constant threat throughout and scored this brilliant solo goal.
“I think Chelsea fans will be singing his name for many years to come.”
Chronicle view
One of the few downsides of Chelsea’s reliance on Mount is perhaps that it might have resulted in fatigue in the last few games.
The England international has started in six out of Chelsea’s seven games in May and played full 90 minutes in his last four games.
Fortunately, he will have plenty of rest ahead of Saturday’s Champions League final and can hopefully be back to his best form in the club’s biggest game of the season.
