Ally McCoist claims that Chelsea teenager Billy Gilmour reminds of Manchester City star Phil Foden.

Gilmour, 19, is a Blues midfielder that is part of the first-team squad at Stamford Bridge.

He picked up his Champions League medal after the team’s victory, and he did play twice during the group stages of the competition.

The youngster is joining the Scotland squad this summer for Euro 2020. Interestingly, he could face some his club teammates if he plays when England face Scotland.

McCoist says that Gilmour is breaking into the senior squad at Chelsea in a similar way to Foden.

21-year-old attacking midfielder Foden is now a main starter in the Man City XI, but the first couple of seasons saw him have games in and out of the team.

“The wee man will just be like a sponge,” McCoist told The Sun.

“He’s like Foden in the respect that a year ago we were asking what Pep would do with him and how he needed more game time.

“He will be learning from N’Golo Kante. I said the same when Foden was going into training with David Silva, Bernardo Silva, Kevin De Bruyne and the like.

“Just go in and learn off these guys. If you can’t learn from Kante, Jorginho, Mateo Kovacic and Mason Mount then there’s something wrong.

“I just hope he can make a name for himself in the same way Foden is doing. I don’t see any reason why Billy can’t do that.”

Chelsea talent Gilmour a star in the making

Gilmour finished the 2020/21 season with just 11 first-team appearances, but it’s worth noting he did most the opening couple of months with a knee injury.

His minutes are limited. However, it’s noticeable when he plays that he’s improving. Additionally, he is learning so much working each day alongside some unbelievable Chelsea midfielders.

He is a deep-lying midfield playmaker that likes to dictate play in front of a defence.

There has been no rush from manager Thomas Tuchel to play him, but has been able to call upon him.
