Andros Townsend is not surprised by Manchester City’s decision to sell Cole Palmer to Chelsea.

However, the Luton Town winger, who was speaking on The Monday Night Club, is shocked that Manchester City did not include a buy-back clause in the deal that saw Cole Palmer head to Stamford Bridge.

The attacker has been a revelation there, recently scoring against the side who sold him in the last transfer window.

Following the 4-4 draw between Chelsea and City, Palmer now has four goals in nine Premier League appearances.

Manchester City should have included a buy-back clause in the Cole Palmer deal

Townsend thinks City needed to have the option to re-sign Palmer when they sold him to Chelsea in the summer.

Discussing their decision to allow him to go on The Monday Night Club, the 32-year-old said: “It doesn’t surprise me that they sold Cole Palmer, what does surprise me is that they didn’t implement a buy-back clause.

“Chelsea and Man City have used that quite a bit. So to sell a young player like that with the potential that he has, even if it was £100 or £150 million, just for that potential if he does go on to the world-class level, which he is clearly capable of doing.”

Would Chelsea have agreed to a buy-back clause?

That seems unlikely. A club of Chelsea’s stature and ambition will not be keen on developing players before having them snatched away, especially by one of their rivals.

From their perspective, it would have made little sense. And if it had been non-negotiable, then you suspect that the Blues probably would have walked away.

Thankfully, it never came to that. Palmer has been exceptional for Chelsea and they would be a lot worse without him.

City, on the other hand, are getting on just fine without the England U21 international, so his departure has not really hurt them too much.

Yes, it was Palmer’s penalty that stopped them from earning all three points over the weekend, with Raheem Sterling really impressed with the spot-kick. But Pep Guardiola’s men are still at the top of the table and will fancy their chances of winning yet another Premier League title.

Ultimately, it is too early to question City’s decision to sell Palmer.
