Andros Townsend has named the front six he’d like England to use moving forward, which has included an interesting decision on Chelsea’s Cole Palmer.

Cole Palmer, 22, is the poster boy at Chelsea because his club form has been sensational since moving to Stamford Bridge in 2023. Now, the left-footed attacker is trying to establish himself as a key individual for his country as well.

Palmer was recently named England’s Player of the Year, which is even more impressive given he’s not been a regular starter for the national side.

He made a rare start on Thursday night during the Nations League fixture at home to Greece, but Lee Carsley’s side ended up losing 2-1.

Andros Townsend would start Cole Palmer for England

Former England international Andros Townsend has claimed that he would find room for Chelsea’s Palmer in the best Three Lions line-up. However, there’s no room for Manchester City superstar Phil Foden.

Townsend has made some interesting selections when asked for the front six he’d pick in England’s best midfield and attack.

He told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport: “Declan Rice as a six. It would be Cole Palmer and Jude Bellingham as two 8s, maybe one dropping in if need be. Bukayo Saka on the right and Anthony Gordon off the left. Then Harry up front.”

Get Cole Palmer in the central hole

England would be wise to take a leaf out of Chelsea’s book in allowing Palmer to dictate from a No 10 position.

Blues supporters have seen Palmer running the show in the opening months of this season. So far, he’s scored six goals and made five assists in seven Premier League games.

It’s extremely difficult for England to cram all their talented playmakers into one XI, but we saw against Greece how not to do it.

We’d love to see Palmer get a run of matches with the national side as the starting No 10, where he’s got the ability to roam and to cause havoc around the edge of the box. Based on form, Chelsea’s ace should be exploited by England as a creative hub.
