Andy Townsend shares what he noticed about Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca after playing with him

To many Chelsea fans, there is not a lot known about new manager Enzo Maresca and what he is actually like.

The Italian signed a long-term contract with the club to replace Mauricio Pochettino this summer, with his work already underway in this pre-season.

Results have not exactly been what many supporters will have been hoping for, and the performance of some players has done little to suggest that they are in a great place to start the season.

There have certainly been some bright spots though. The performances of Marc Guiu have impressed Maresca and Chelsea fans alike.

His rise to managerial brilliance is something which former teammate Andy Townsend was perhaps not surprised by, with him explaining how he was a bit of a maverick during his playing days.

Townsend shares Maresca was a ‘maverick’

He told TalkSPORT: “Enzo was a young kid at West Brom when I was finishing. He was there as a young boy when I was a player, Enzo Maresca.

“He was always a maverick kind of footballer, he was a gifted player, went off to Spain and did very well at Sevilla, and his managerial career, he has shown great promise.”

Tricky start for Maresca and Chelsea

Maresca will be hoping he has got his side firing before the Premier League season comes about, with a more than tricky test awaiting him on the opening day.

He will face his former employers Manchester City at Stamford Bridge, and will be hoping to have more clarity over who he can trust to start that day.

One player who did his chances no favours in the last friendly was Romeo Lavia, who is of course coming off a long layoff from injury.

The tour is taking place without the likes of Cole Palmer and Marc Cucurella available to the manager, and therefore it is fair to say that it is not a true representation of the club at this stage.

However, a few more positive results will give them a far better feeling going into what promises to be a busy campaign in West London.
