Chelsea supporters on social media were not amused by Gary Lineker’s recent statement about Trent Alexander-Arnold.

It was confirmed yesterday that Alexander-Arnold would miss the European Championships after suffering a thigh injury during England’s friendly with Austria.

Shortly after the announcement, Lineker declared on Twitter that the Liverpool defender was the ‘best attacking right back in world football’.

He got a stream of replies from several different fan bases arguing against his statement.

Blues followers took particular offence to this and suggested Reece James as a suitable alternative to Alexander-Arnold.

Here’s how they reacted on Twitter:

There is of course an argument to be had about Alexander-Arnold’s status amongst the game’s greatest.

His goals and assists statistics over the past few years have been phenomenal, barely rivalled by anyone across Europe.

However, James is gradually gaining ground on his England teammate.

The 21-year-old has grown in stature since he broke into Chelsea’s first team under Frank Lampard.

At one stage, the Three Lions right-back slot was Alexander-Arnold’s to lose.

Many now believe James is the new heir to the throne.

With the Liverpool lad ruled out of the Euros, it is the time for Chelsea’s young star to stake his claim.
