Enzo Fernandez scored a dramatic last-minute winner as Argentina survived a World Cup Round of 16 scare against Egypt.

Fernandez had not enjoyed the best tournament up until now, with his own media critical of his performances despite Lionel Messi’s brilliance.

The world champions looked dead and buried when they went 2-0 down in the second half, however Fernandez helped lead the charge to spark an epic comeback.

This time, Argentine media were far kinder on the Chelsea man. TyC Sports described his late goal as ‘sensational’

They said: “After the fervor and offensive burst that burned all the papers in both teams, in stoppage time the miraculous comeback that seemed impossible moments before was completed.

“This time it was Argentina who defended and countered, with Lautaro Martínez in the role of assister placing a pinpoint cross that Enzo Fernández managed to convert into a goal with a sensational header that gave the national team the victory and puts them back among the top eight in the world.”

Fernandez is the first Chelsea player to score at the World Cup this summer, seeing the Blues avoid an embarrassing record of not having a goalscorer at the tournament for the first time since 2002.

As future Chelsea star Valentin Barco watched on from the bench, his nation set up a quarter-final tie with either Switzerland or Colombia.

If the favourites continue to win, a semi-final against England will be on the cards, and a potential clash against club teammate and great friend, Reece James.

The latest updates on Fernandez’s club future suggests that he will be remaining at Stamford Bridge for next season, with Real Madrid currently unwilling to pay what Chelsea want to let him go.
