Arrizabalaga sends message to Chelsea teammates after defeat

Blues goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga said the underperforming Chelsea team are to blame for Saturday’s defeat to Southampton.

Graham Potter left out a few key players when facing Southampton at Stamford Bridge at the weekend.

Reece James, Thiago Silva, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, and Hakim Ziyech were all rested as Potter wanted to manage their load.

James and Silva, in particular, play key roles both defensively and offensively, so their absence definitely had an effect on the team.

But Arrizabalaga argued that the whole team just did not do well enough at the moment.

“Everything is going against us right now, we are in a bad moment, and we have to stick together,” the Spain international said after the game when asked if Potter’s decision to rest key players was to blame for the defeat.

“We have a big squad, a lot of players, and a lot of quality, but the things, they are not going well.

“But it is not because we changed six or five or one player, it is more general, we are not doing well, it is clear and we have to improve.

“It is time to stick together and time to work, work and work.”

Well, there is no doubt that the Chelsea side on Saturday should have had enough quality to beat 20th-placed Southampton.

Potter’s men also arguably played well enough to win if it was not for their inability to put the ball in the back of the net.

As Arrizabalaga pointed out, everything seems to be going against this Chelsea team at the moment, and the only solution is to improve.
