Atletico Madrid ace Joao Felix shared how Mason Mount caught his attention as he praised the Chelsea midfielder ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League round of 16 clash.
The 21-year-old is one of the biggest names in world football, having won the Golden Boy award back in 2019.
He had a tough start in La Liga following his big-money move to Atletico Madrid in summer 2019 but has regained his old touch and raked nine goals and four assists this season.
But Chelsea also have a young talent that has caught Felix’s attention — even before his Premier League breakthrough last season.
“I like the way he [Mount] plays, the way he likes to drag the ball, the way he touches the ball,’ the Portugal international told the Daily Mail.
“I played with Chris Willock in Benfica three or four years ago and he told me that Chelsea has a guy that he sees who is similar to me and he told me it was Mason Mount.
“A few years later he appeared in Chelsea and I like the way he plays.
“Chris had told me about him before he appeared in the Premier League, so I was waiting to see him.”
There are clearly similarities between these two attacking midfielders who thrive when playing behind a striker.
Particularly the younger version of these two that were known for their goalscoring records.
But they seem to have developed quite differently.
Felix has been playing as a deep-lying forward in Diego Simeone’s 3-5-2 this season, a role which gives him the licence to express himself on the pitch.
Mount, on the other hand, has grown into a versatile, all-around midfielder who can play as No.6, No.8, No.10 and even as wingers.
