BBC pundit can actually see Southampton star ‘signing’ for Chelsea, offer has already been made

Even though Southampton’s relegation to the Championship has already been confirmed, Chelsea have been mentioned as a good fit for one Saints star.

Southampton won’t be in the Premier League next season because their relegation was confirmed after a 3-1 defeat to Tottenham on Sunday.

As it stands, last season’s three promoted teams will all be going straight back down.

Chelsea-owned midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu, 21, hasn’t been able to help Southampton stay up during his loan at St Mary’s this season. Interestingly, one of his Saints teammates is linked with a potential move to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea told Aaron Ramsdale would be a good signing for them

BBC pundit Michael Brown believes that Southampton’s Aaron Ramsdale, 26, would be a good signing for Chelsea.

When asked if the Saints goalkeeper could move to the Blues, Brown told BBC Sport: “Yeah, all day long… I think you’ve got a good quality keeper. I think he’s getting better with his feet… I think he would be a good signing for Chelsea.”

Chelsea’s goalkeeper position has been a problem area for them this campaign, regularly swapping between Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen. Is Ramsdale really the answer for them, though?

It’s worth noting that the Blues already own two talented goalkeepers who are impressing elsewhere this season. Mike Penders is the first-choice gloveman for Genk, while Djordje Petrovic is starring for sister club Strasbourg.

Chelsea believe Penders has ‘elite potential’ and expect him to adapt to Premier League football quickly when his move to West London becomes official in the summer.

As for Petrovic, it’ll be interesting to see if he gets enough crack in between the sticks for the Blues after playing under Mauricio Pochettino last season. Apparently, there’s a chance Petrovic is sold in the next transfer window.

Chelsea have already made offer for Aaron Ramsdale

First of all, it was reported back in May 2024 that Ramsdale was on Chelsea’s radar before Southampton eventually signed him from Arsenal last summer.

It’s now been claimed in March 2025 that Ramsdale has an offer on the table from Chelsea to join them.

Now that he’s been relegated, will the English shot-stopper get another move to stay in the top division? Even though he’s been relegated from the Premier League on three separate times, he’s earned five senior international caps for England.

If Chelsea do end up signing Ramsdale to be their first-choice goalkeeper next season, we’d expect a lot of frustration in response because of his CV.
