Garth Crooks says that Raheem Sterling looked back towards his best in his latest Chelsea performance at the weekend.

The Blues suffered a really disappointing 3-1 away defeat on Sunday away to West Ham, which means they have just one point from their opening two Premier League fixtures.

However, the individual display of Raheem Sterling is certainly something that has drawn a lot of attention for the right reasons.

The £50million attacker (Daily Mail) was the sharpest player on the pitch with some explosive dribbles and real moments of quality with the ball at his feet. Hopefully, there’s a lot more to come from him moving forward this season.

BBC pundit Crooks claims that Sterling played his best game against West Ham since the delayed Euro 2020 tournament with England, which took place two years ago in the summer of 2021.

“Sterling was their only shining light in this fixture and he did everything he possibly could to bring his team back into the game. This was the best game I have seen from the England player since he starred in Euro 2020,” Crooks told BBC Sport.

“Boy, have Chelsea got some work to do. At least it looks like they’ve got Sterling playing again.”

It was an underwhelming debut season for Sterling last year in Chelsea colours, whose return of 9 goals in 38 games is below the standard he set at Manchester City.

The England international is still a talented winger, though, with bags of speed and quality.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side really needs him to emerge as a proper leader in this side as one of the experienced heads.

It’s quite telling that Pochettino singled out Sterling as a really “important player” for Chelsea right now, as quoted by Football London.
