‘Becoming unreliable’: Chris Sutton claims Chelsea player is not as trustworthy anymore following the Everton loss

Chris Sutton has suggested that Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta can no longer be trusted like he used to.

Speaking on the BBC Monday Night Club, the former striker scrutinised Azpilicueta for his mistake that gifted Everton a huge victory last weekend.

Richarlison pounced upon the defender whilst he dawdled in possession and then slotted past Edouard Mendy, an accurate summary of how things have been going for Thomas Tuchel’s men recently.

Frank Lampard’s men managed to hold off their manager’s beloved Blues to secure what could turn out to be a massive step toward Premier League safety.

Meanwhile, Chelsea’s campaign could conclude with a whimper if they fail to improve their form.

They have only won once in their last four league fixtures, with the triumph over West Ham United hardly anything to scream and shout about.

Chelsea bruised by Everton

Whilst a top-four place is pretty much secured, Tuchel’s team are still at risk of finishing below Arsenal or Tottenham Hotspur for the first time since 2018.

The German coach will not want that blotch on his relatively unstained record, one that has admittedly got dirtier by the day recently.

However, the Chelsea boss cannot entirely be blamed for his side’s poor run of results.

Arsenal benefitted from no fewer than three mistakes when they defeated the European champions 4-2 away from home last month.

Azpilicueta gave away a needless penalty in the dying embers of the match, adding extra gloss to the Gunners’ conquest.

He then followed up this blunder with the error at Everton, another totally avoidable scenario.

“With Chelsea, the wheels have come off slightly. It was a poor performance,” said Sutton on Chelsea’s defeat against the Toffees.

“Azpilicueta making the mistake. A guy who has been so reliable for Chelsea becoming unreliable. That’s been the story of Chelsea as of late.”

Get your act together, Blues

Sadly, Sutton is right.

Chelsea could make a blooper real for the entire campaign from just the past few outings.

It’s as if the squad have already switched off for the season, with their plans for the summer being formulated.

You can safely say Liverpool and Manchester City will not be thinking like this, hence why they are aiming for English and European domination.

Liverpool are still on for a historic quadruple, which could be achieved if they beat Chelsea in the FA Cup final later this month.

If this isn’t motivation for the players to pull their socks up, we aren’t sure what is.
