Blues defender Ben Chilwell has given an excited three-word response to the Chelsea announcement on Wednesday confirming the signing of Marcus Bettinelli.
Chelsea have completed their first signing of the summer window today with the capture of Bettinelli on a free transfer
The 29-year-old Englishman was out of contract after leaving Fulham in the summer, so he’s now made a short move across west London.
He’s a 6ft 4in goalkeeper that played 120 games in a Fulham shirt. In addition, during a loan at Middlesbrough last season in the Championship, he kept 13 clean sheets in 42 appearances.
Edouard Mendy, who was outstanding last year during his debut Chelsea season, is the number one goalkeeper at Stamford Bridge. However, Bettinelli, along with Kepa Arrizabalaga, are going to play be providing competition for a starting position.
Chilwell posted “what a guy” on Instagram after the signing announcement.
The new Blues goalkeeper has also received so many messages on his own Instagram after his move. The likes of Newcastle United’s Callum Wilson, as well as Aston Villa’s Matt Targett have congratulated him. Ex-Chelsea goalkeeper Bradley Collins is another that commented.
Bettinelli a shrewd Chelsea signing that hopefully starts chain reaction of signings
Chelsea don’t need to go overboard in this summer’s window, especially as this current group won the Champions League last season.
However, a couple of fresh faces in key areas will go along way to possibly getting Thomas Tuchel’s men in a league title race.
Bettinelli immediately adds to Chelsea’s homegrown quota. Also, he’s actually a really reliable goalkeeper who’s great to have in reserve.
It’s going to be tough for him to get minutes, he’ll already know that, but it’s a great move for him that will perhaps make him better on the training pitches.
