Ben Chilwell has claimed that Chelsea teammate Edouard Mendy makes the goal look so small when he plays.

Mendy has made a superb start to his Blues career since joining in the summer from Rennes and the goalkeeper has kept six clean sheets in his opening seven games across all competitions.

The 28-year-old Frenchman is a 6ft 6in colossus in net the has made some great reflex saves in a Chelsea shirt and he commands his box from crosses, something which has taken a big pressure off the backline.

England left-back Chilwell is another new face that has joined the XI to help improve it defensively, as well as experienced centre-back Thiago Silva.

Frank Lampard’s side are preparing to face Sheffield United on Saturday evening in the Premier League and there is a newfound belief in the defence that certainly didn’t exist last year.

Chilwell has applauded the quality and presence of shot-stopper Mendy:

‘If you see Edou every day in training he makes the goal look so small. I don’t know if you see it on TV but he’s absolutely huge!” Chilwell said, as quoted by the club’s official website.

“As a person he is probably one of the most laid-back people you are going to meet. He’s settled in very quickly, he gets on with everyone, he speaks great English which has probably helped him a lot, and he’s super easy to get on with.”

Despite spending a staggering £71million (BBC) to sign Kepa Arrizabalaga from Athletic Bilbao two years ago, his second season at Stamford Bridge last year was really poor and it wasn’t a surprise when a new goalkeeper was signed to battle for the number one position.

Mendy has made a near faultless start to his career in English football and he appears to have struck a great relationship already behind the defence.
