Benjamin Sesko explains why he chose to stay at RB Leipzig despite attracting interest from Chelsea

Recent Chelsea target Benjamin Sesko has been speaking about why he chose to remain at RB Leipzig this transfer window.

Benjamin Sesko attracted a lot of interest earlier this summer, including from Chelsea.

Chelsea even prioritised Sesko over Julian Alvarez but, in the end, they were unable to lure the striker to Stamford Bridge.

The Blues have been able to sign Marc Guiu from Barcelona, and the Spaniard has featured in both of their pre-season games so far.

But still being just 18 years of age, Chelsea supporters will have concerns about Guiu and Nicolas Jackson being the team’s first and second-choice strikers for the upcoming campaign if that is the route the club decide to go down.

Benjamin Sesko on his decision to stay at RB Leipzig

With Chelsea needing a bit more firepower up front, Sesko could have been a nice addition to their squad.

Last season, the 21-year-old went on a run of seven goals in seven consecutive games in the final stretch of the Bundesliga campaign.

It is no surprise that Sesko caught the attention of Chelsea, but the Slovenian wanted to remain at Leipzig to develop.

In an interview with Nogomania, he said: “I thought it through very well. I believe I made the right decision. I wanted to gain more experience, learn more, and not rush things. Leipzig is an excellent club that can provide what I need for the next step.

“Leipzig’s vision is clear; everything is geared towards growth, progress, and high goals. I felt it was right to decide this way.”

Arsenal were confident of beating Chelsea to Sesko, so there was no guarantee that the Blues would have signed him even if he did choose to leave Leipzig.

When Chelsea could have another chance to sign Benjamin Sesko

Sesko has signed a new contract at Leipzig now but, even so, the Slovenia international could still leave the Red Bull Arena in the near future.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Sesko could depart Leipzig next year or in 2026. So if Chelsea do not sign another centre-forward this summer, that is something to keep an eye on.

If they do, though, you would probably expect them not to enter the race for Sesko’s signature when the former Red Bull Salzburg man does become available.
